Changes by Version,
Last Minute Changes
===================
Summary of Changes in CompuShow Version 8.40:
============================================
- Greatly extended mouse support! You can do almost everything without ever
touching the keyboard; log to a different drive, select a display mode, set
directory and program options, and more.
- Dithering of all 2, 4, and 16 color display modes. Best ever display
quality on Hercules, CGA, and EGA adapters!
- "Full time rescaling" automatically displays all graphics to fit or fill
the screen.
- New pop-up boxes, including an option box to turn on/off sounds, auto-
rescaling, and dithering.
- Support of XMS (Extended) memory as well as EMS (Expanded) memory.
- TIFF class B, G, P, R, and F graphics with PackBits, LZW, CCITT group 3 & 4
and no compression.
- GEM/Ventura IMG graphics.
- "OS/2 style" BMP graphics.
- [F1] displays file information while viewing the graphic.
- GREATLY improved printing quality on all printers with the enhanced
(registered) program! (The people who've been testing the new version have
described the new print quality as "terrific", "spectacular", "incredible"
and "really super"!)
Version 8.41:
- Use the Tab key to display file information while viewing the graphic,
rather than [F1], which is used to adjust the colors.
- Correct full-time rescaling problem on CGA, EGA, etc.
Version 8.42:
- Increase "directory sort memory".
Version 8.43:
- Correct rescaled printing of large images in 640k.
Version 8.44:
- Correct GIF89a restore to background.

What's OLD (and possibly dangerous)!
====================================
Since December 1989, we've seen a number of programs claiming to be version
"8.01", "8.31", "8.51", etc. appear on electronic bulletin boards. Generally
these counterfeits have been "hacked" from version 7.0 or 7.2, with the
documentation and on-screen version number changed:
- This supposedly "new" version usually has 1989 file dates.
- The documentation (README.DOC) describes changes in version 7 and the
bogus version (8.xx).
- A hack of version 7 will not have support for:
- GIF version 89a, PC Paint (PIC), PC Paintbrush (PCX), Dr. Halo (PIC and
CUT), Deluxe Paint (LBM), ColoRix and EGA Paint, Targa, BMP, etc.
- Spacebar display from the file directory or graphics information box,
with the best mode character shown at the cursor on the graphics
information box.
- Pop-up [F5] box to sort directory, Alt-R palette rotation, [F7] to tag
files and [F8] to show tagged files, command line display of one or
more files.
- EMS/XMS and mouse support, rescale to fit/fill screen, pop up option
box and dithering.
Our best guess is that these counterfeit programs are a direct result of
BBSes that limit downloads based on "credit" for uploads. Evidentally, some
people are so desperate to get credit that they'll "hack together" a
counterfeit program when they don't have anything legitimate to upload.
Apparently the only malicious intent is to disappoint anyone who's looking
for the latest version. However, there have been some (unconfirmed) reports
of VIRUSES attached to some counterfeit programs, so it's best to play it
safe! If you find a program that fits the above description, by all means
ERASE IT IMMEDIATELY and inform the SysOp that it's a counterfeit program,
and others should be notified that it may be destructive.
You can always find the latest legitimate version of CompuShow on CompuServe
(GO PICS, LIBrary 3, CSHOWA.EXE), on GEnie (the IBMPC roundtable, library
14, CSHOWA.ZIP), and on the One-Stop Bit BBS (602-282-9035).
